Thomas J. Henderson was born in Brownsville, TN but moved North to Illinois before he was a teenager. He served as clerk of the Board of Commissioners of Stark County, IL from 1847 to 1849, and as clerk of the court of Stark County from 1849 to 1853. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1852. He opened his practice in Toulon, IL and continued to practice until he entered into politics. He served as a member of the Illinois House of Representatives in 1855 and 1856 and then as a member of the Illinois Senate from 1857 to 1860. In 1862, he enlisted in the army and mustered in as a colonel of the 112th IL Inf. He fought with his men at the Siege of Nashville and the Atlanta Campaign. He was wounded in the foot at the Battle of Resaca. He commanded his men until August 12, 1864 when he was brevetted brigadier general.
Over 20 Civil War-period papers, mostly manuscript and printed special orders, received by Henderson while brigadier general are offered in the lot, including: marching orders for the Army of Ohio written from Raleigh, NC, April 24, 1865; special orders assigning Bvt. Brig. General G.W. Schofield command of the 2nd Brig. 3rd div. 23rd A.C.; letter from Bvt. Brig. General G.W. Schofield written from Greensboro, NC on June 8, 1865; LS from Capt. John Birch, 63rd IN, also wounded at the Battle of Resaca; LS from Lieut. Colonel Samuel Hufty written from Greensboro, NC on May 26, 1865; 4 special orders signed by Asst. Adj. General John Allen Campbell including requests for court martials of prisoners and an investigation of stolen goods, May 1865; 2 special orders issued under the command of General Samuel P. Carter including a request for a surgeon to travel to obtain medical supplies for the 23rd 3rd Div. Army corps and Rebel Hospital, May 1865; additional special orders include an order for soldiers to return all pack animals obtained on the front and an investigation of the loss of ordinance and certain ordinance stores from the company quarters; and 6 documents pertaining to the officers of the 177th OH, 9th NJ, and 65th IN.
The lot also features a top hat presumably worn by Brigadier General Thomas J. Henderson at Lincoln's inauguration, made by Stinementz & Sons in Washington, DC, with Dobbs & Co's decorated hat box; ALS from Henderson to President Theodore Roosevelt, dated October 6, 1906, concerning a photograph of Lincoln and a letter written to William H. Henderson, Thomas Henderson's father, from Lincoln; 5pp pamphlet titled
Speech of Mr. Lincoln at a Political Discussion, In the Hall of the House of Representatives, December 1839 at Springfield, Illinois; and a pamphlet of the memorial address delivered by General Thomas J. Henderson at the memorial service for President Grant at Apollo Hall in Princeton, IL.
Condition
All of the Civil War letters and the hat are in excellent condition; the pamphlets are fragile with some toning and brittle edges; the hat box is in poor condition.
