Brazilian, 20th century. A large folk art sand bottle with four hounds amidst a landscape, and decorative borders to the neck of the bottle, the name Rice Gwynn in large letters above the hounds, and the name Edgar at the base of the neck; ht. 11.5 in.
AUCTIONEER'S NOTE: Edgar is the signature of the artist, now known to be the Brazilian artist Edgar Freitas. Rice Gwynn is likely the name of the bottle's original owner. Records show a Rice Gwynn, Jr. (1901-1977) born in Virginia and buried in Danville City, Virginia. The bottle was found at a Richmond, Virginia estate sale.
Freitas' works are part of Brazilian Museum collections, including Museu Casa Do Pontal, and several private collections.
