- Lot Description
American (probably Rhode Island), late 18th century. A group of four bowback Windsor chairs in mixed woods with bulbous bows and boldly turned baluster legs, each branded A. Thayer on underside. Retaining old black paint; oah. 36 in. (each).
In American Windsor Chairs, Evans lists Thayer in southeastern New England, however, the Rhode Island Furniture Archive suggests Rhode Island, specifically, based on the stylistic similarities to local production. It is not known if A. Thayer was a maker, repairer, or owner.
Provenance: Property from the Collection of Dr. James and Betty Sutherland, Cincinnati, OHThree with cracked seats. One with pieced repairs to the seat.Condition
