Likely French, ca 1881. A carved bone snuff box in the form of a book, with a domed lid and base, having mother-of-pearl and tortoiseshell inlaid panels with inscriptions reading Souvenir / Noumea and Republique / 1881; lg. 2.75, wd. 1.75, dp. .75 in.
Possibly executed by a prisoner at the French penal colony located in New Caledonia from 1863-1922, where sentences often included hard labor in Noumea.
