Las Vegas Daily Optic. Las Vegas, NM: Las Vegas Publishing Company, February 14, 1881. 4pp, approx. 12.75 x 20 in. Featuring a story about legendary Western outlaws Dave Rudabaugh, member of Billy the Kid's gang, and John J. Webb, one-time lawman turned outlaw.
In a section titled "Radabaugh's [sic] Remembrances," the paper recounts that Dave Rudabaugh "boldly testified that he led the attack on the stage, and was quite certain that Jordan J. Webb, one of the accused on trial, was not present. He refused to divulge the name of the robbers, whom he claims to know. Radabaugh [sic] says that if severe punishment is ever meted out to him (and he deserves it if ever a criminal did) he will make it hot for some of his old chums who are now at large, and laughing up their sleeves at him, in his solitary confinement in the Santa Fe jail." Dave Rudabaugh and John Joshua Webb, erroneously identified as Jordan J. Webb in this account, were first acquainted when Webb served on Sheriff Bat Masterson's posse as it attempted to apprehend Rudabaugh following a series of train robberies. In 1879, both men terrorized Las Vegas, NM, as members of the "Dodge City" gang. While Webb was imprisoned in Las Vegas, Rudabaugh left town and joined up with Billy the Kid and his gang. Billy the Kid and Rudabaugh were captured on December 23, 1880, and taken to Santa Fe. Rudabaugh was eventually transferred to Las Vegas to stand trial.
Minor loss on bottom left and bottom edge. Slight toning along edge lines and minimal dampstaining on bottom edge line. Pencil mark appears above section of paper with Rudabaugh story.
