The London Chronicle: or, Universal Evening Post. London: September 25-27, 1759. Vol. VI, No. 429. 8pp (pp. 297-304), approx. 8 x 10.25 in.
Featuring interior report on Benjamin Franklin's experiments with electricity (pp. 300-301). The column concludes:
Scarce were the first miracles of electricity discovered, when attempts were made to employ it in accelerating the vegetation of plants, in transmitting the virtues of medicines into the body, in curing paralysis; and some imagined they had succeeded in all these. But it doth not appear that the effects were such as were promised: The admirations and joy occasioned by such a surprising thin, or a desire to magnify its effects by applying it it to what most nearly concerns us, may serve to excuse this precipitation. But is it not advantage enough that electricity increases our knowledge and humbles our pride?
Interestingly, the first article in the science news section has to do with medicine as well. It begins:
Physicians are often accused of being rash; I think they are rather timid. They confine themselves to a small number of medicines which have not the virtues ascribed to them; and never try others, that perhaps might prove efficacious. All our specifics we owe to chance and to savages; not one to physicians.
Very good. Little toning or foxing.
