The People's Party, also known as the Populist Party, was a left-wing grassroots party mostly comprised of angry farmers. It lasted a short time, from 1892 until being absorbed by the Democratic Party in 1896. Former Major General Benjamin Butler, a colorful and controversial character, was elected governor of Massachusetts in 1882 with Democratic and Greenback Party support.
