Printed advertisement, 22 x 28.75 in., promoting the book Belden, the White Chief; or, Twelve Years among the Wild Indians of the Plains. From the Diaries and Manuscripts of George P. Belden, formerly of New Philadelphia, Ohio. Edited by Gen. James S. Brisbin, USA. Cincinnati & New York: C.F. Vent, n.d., ca 1870-1871.
A highly graphic promotional broadside featuring close to twenty samples of illustrations included in the lavishly "embellished and illustrated" Indian Wars-era book chronicling the life of George P. Belden, a hunter, trapper, and guide who "left his friends and a home of plenty, and cast his lot unreservedly among the Red Men of the Plains, becoming "in their estimation a 'warrior of the first class.'" The illustrations, credited to the New York Bureau of Illustration, include a portrait of Belden, Indian chiefs, depictions of various events described in the book, from a buffalo chase to fights with Indians and ceremonial activities, as well as examples of pipes, clubs, tomahawks, and more. Belden, who was a veteran of both the Civil War and Indian Wars, died in 1871, either the murder victim of an Unkpapa Sioux or of a half-breed with whom he had quarreled. (Information obtained from the Nebraska State Historical Society website, July 25, 2017.)
Attractive broadside illustrating events from the real-life story behind the feature film, "A Man Called Hoss."
Toning of the paper and some minor wear.
