Albumen photograph, 6 x 4.5 in. (sight), showing three Southern Cheyenne Chiefs identified along lower margin as "Fat Bear, Big Head, and Dull Knife," with no photographer's imprint, but taken by William Soule, 1869. Inked note below photograph states, "These prisoners were captured last winter by Gen. Custer's Comand [sic] 7th Cav." Matted and framed, 11.5 x 9.5 in.
A scarcely encountered photograph of three Cheyenne prisoners of war captured during the Battle of the Washita, which was part of the Comanche campaign in Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, and the Texas border regions. Custer's troops attacked Black Kettle's village in the winter of 1868, killing 250. The photograph was taken by Soule either at Camp Supply on March 29 or at Fort Dodge on April 2, 1869.
Toning to photograph. Image has lightened a bit. Accompanying note trimmed down and reinforced with Scotch tape, mounted atop mat below photo.
Item is in good condition. Fading to velvet. Expected age splitting to some wood carving throughout.
