The Advance EXTRA. Ogdensburg, NY: August 12, 1862. Printed broadside, 4.25 x 14.5 in.
Featuring a report from Washington on "The Fight in Virginia," the first major battle in Culpeper, VA, at Cedar (or Slaughter's) Mountain, in which Confederate troops under Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson successfully blocked a Union advance into central Virginia. With a description of the large number of wounded US officers and soldiers.
News from Hudson, MO, reports on Joseph Porter's guerrillas being overtaken by Colonel McNeil in the Western part of Macon County, with the Union army killing and wounding a large number of Confederate soldiers during the fight. The report notes that "It is estimated from reliable authority that 2,000 of Porter's gang have deserted and scattered."
Lincoln's order for the draft is also announced. Plummeting enlistment numbers and the desperate need for men forced Lincoln to call for a national draft. On August 4, 1862, he issued an Executive Order making it a requirement for all able-bodied men to register for and possibly fight for the Union cause.
The final report is from Culpeper, VA, which states that the "enemy this morning sent out a flag of truce, asking permission to bury their dead."
