- Lot Description
.59 caliber, 22.875" barrel, blued finish, brass furniture, beech stock. Lock marked BARNETT / LONDON in a sans-serif font, obverse stock stamped with a three-line Barnett cartouche in an oval. Rear sight with one fixed and two movable leaves, two barrel bands, slings swivels on upper band and in toe of stock. Jag head iron ramrod. Based upon the Pattern 1853 Enfield Artillery Carbine, these guns were made for commercial sale to the foreign and British colonial trade during the post-Civil War era. They do not conform exactly to British military specifications, and do not have saber bayonet lugs. Barrels are invariably Belgian proved and vary somewhat from the standard 24" length of the military guns. Some examples have been noted marked "GOALS" followed by a location or name, indicating use as prison guard guns.
Good. Metal with no finish and shows light to moderate pitting evenly distributed. Mechanically functional, bore heavily pitted. Brass with a golden patina. Stock worn with dings and mars, some loss around the lock and a crack at the tang.Condition
