heavily curved bow with hide wrapped grip, German silver detailing, and red pigment; twisted sinew string, length 29 in.; PLUS nine metal-tipped arrows and one bird dart, average length 28 in.

On May 29th, 1878 Lt. Herbert E. Tutherly and Mary Maron Cotton were married at the Congregational church in Claremont and left immediately for his new station at Ft. Walla Walla, Washington. As usual at that time with most troops stationed in the west, Father's troop was "in the field" and on the march during the summer. That was the year when the Bannock and Paiute indians[sic] were on the war-path. They were subdued during the summer... It was shortly after the close of the campaign that the march was made and Mother said they encountered small bands of indians going to the reservations, and that along the way were remains of many burned ranch building whose occupants had been killed (excerpt from hand-written biography of General Tutherly by his son, 1948-1949)In another typed family letter it is noted: The bow and arrows are the oldest. Mother, Erik's Great Great Grandmother, got them in Eastern Oregon in 1878-79. They belonged to Bannock Indians. Smooth arrows are hunting arrows; others are for fighting.
HERBERT TUTHERLY was born in Claremont, New Hampshire April 5th, 1848. He entered the U.S. Military Academy in 1868, was graduated in 1872 and assigned a second lieutenant to the 1st Cavalry. He was retired at his own request Oct. 1, 1906 after over 30 years of service. During his Army service General Tutherly was on frontier duty at various parts of the West, which included service in Arizona, Washington, Oregon, Nevada, Kansas, and Montana. During the war with Spain he commanded four troops of the 1st Cavalry in the Battle of San Juan Hill and subsequent engagements in the surrender of the Spanish at Saratoga, July 17, 1898 (“Brigadier General Herbert E. Tutherly obituary.” Army and Navy Journal. August 27, 1927: 1373).
