- Lot Description
Spauldings Baseball Guide Group 1 No. 1. Soft lithographed cover. New York: American Sports Publishing Co., March 1916. 346pp, plus 34pp ads and schedules. Includes biographies of professional ball players, most notably Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb, advertisements, stats, action shots of the game and more.
The National League in 1915 was made up of Philadelphia, Boston, Brooklyn, Chicago, Pittsburgh, St. Louis, Cincinnati, New York. The American League: Boston, Detroit, Chicago, Washington, New York, St. Louis, Cleveland, Philadelphia. It is striking that in these "big leagues," the western-most team was St. Louis, and many cities fielded a team in each league (as a few still do today).
There are also reports on the International League, American Association (Minor League), with photos of the teams in Louisville, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Columbus. The Western League with photo of Des Moines team (league champion 1915), Denver, Lincoln, New Orleans; the Southern Association - Mobile and Little Rock; Indiana-Illinois-Iowa League (Moline - champs); the New England League (champs - Portland, ME); Central League (champs - Evansville); Texas League (champs - Waco); Northwestern League (champs - Seattle); New York State League (champs - Binghamton); Plus the Virginia League, Canadian League, Northern League, South Atlantic League, North Carolina League, Western Association, Georgia-Alabama League, Central Association, Ohio State League, Interstate League, Blue Ridge League, F.L.A.G. League, and Federal League. Presumably since transportation was slower and more difficult, many games were played in smaller regions.
Back has 30+ pages of ads for Spaulding equipment - gloves, masks, uniforms, balls, bats, etc.
Condition
Some loss on the bottom left portion of the spine and some wear, very good condition.
