Autumn, Sellersville, PA by Walter Emerson Baum
Walter Emerson Baum (American, 1884-1956). Oil on canvas. A view of Sellersville, PA, showing, in the background, St. Paul's Church of Christ rising above the homes on Sellerville's outskirts. Signed l.r., titled and dated 1923 on verso; 32 x 40 in. (sight).
This painting depicts a peaceful view of the painter's hometown, where he lived and worked for most of his life. Along with painting, Baum held multiple jobs in Sellersville, including working in the barbershop, writing and editing for the Sellersville Herald for over 20 years and, eventually, teaching art at the local high school. Baum worked and taught in the tradition of plein air painting. This lot is a fine example of this practice on a landscape with which the artist was intimately familiar.Condition
