11mm (11.15x58R), 33.125" barrel, bright finish, beech stock. Lock market LENZ / 1868 and barrel marked St 70 near receiver, breech marked WERNDL. Austrian unit markings on buttplate tang. Long range rear sight, cleaning rod, sling swivels. This was Austria's first purpose built breechloading military rifle, replacing the Wanzl alteration of percussion M-1854 Lorenz. An attached display card notes that this rifle was one of a group purchased in 1918 by the Verdigre, Nebraska (Knox County) Home Guard to arm the citizens who had volunteered to guard the local mill and grain silos during the First World War. The card notes that the group obtained 40 of these surplus guns from Francis Bannerman & Co of New York, chambered for the ".43 Werndl" cartridge.
