Attributed to Jane Stuart (American, 1812-1888). Oil on canvas. Portrait of Abigail Brown Brooks Adams (1808-1889) and daughter Mary Gardner Adams Quincy (1845-1921), ca 1852-53, unsigned. Housed in a gilt frame, probably by Heyworth of Boston; 33.5 x 26.5 in. (sight).
With a 19th century paper collector's label of Ward Brooks Frothingham, Boston, Massachusetts, in mylar sleeve on verso, a 20th century label with former owner's name, Bodenheimer, on the stretcher u.r., canvas maker credit From / J. J. Adamas / 99 Washington St. / Boston stenciled on the reverse of the canvas, and Stuart's Boston working address 22 Bromfield St. written on the interior of the frame. According to the Boston directory of 1857, Jane Stuart, painter, indeed lived at 22 Bromfield Street. Stuart, daughter of Gilbert Stuart, was an established artist in her own right, taking over the family business after her father's death. By tradition, this painting was gifted by the Adams family to their friend, Dr. N. James Bodenheimer.

The canvas was edge-lined, but not fully relined. There are a few spots of in-painting as revealed by a black light examination
