- Lot Description
Attributed to Gerrit van Honthorst (Dutch, 1592-1656). Oil on panel, housed in a gilt frame. A half-length portrait of Elizabeth Stuart, Queen of Bohemia, known as the Winter Queen, depicted in a dark blue dress with lace collar, a pearl collar and pearl brooch, with inscription Eliz. Queen of Bohemia / Sister to King Charles I l.l. and circled initials VA and F u.r.; 29 x 24.25 in. (sight).
Elizabeth Stuart (1596-1662) was the eldest daughter of James Charles Stuart, known as James VI, King of Scotland, and James I, King of England and Ireland. In 1613, Elizabeth married Frederick V of the Palatinate, who accessed the throne of Bohemia in 1619. Because his reign lasted less than a year, spanning only one winter, Elizabeth was named the Winter Queen. The royal family left Prague at the end of 1620 and settled in The Hague, where they patronized painter Gerrit (Gerard) van Honthorst. While a plaque on the frame attributes the portrait to his brother Willem, it is more likely to have been executed by Gerrit, who is known to have extensively portrayed the Bohemian royal family in The Hague, after their exile in 1620. The portrait offered here is in fact very similar in composition to another portrait of the Winter Queen by Gerrit van Honthorst, an oil on canvas dated 1650, on display at the National Trust, Ashdown House, Berkshire.

Condition
The painting was executed on three wood panels, once joined together, as evidenced by tape and glue residue on the reverse. Old varnish has dissipated in some areas and yellowed. There is-painting on the chin of the figure, the bottom of her right earring, and on the two inscriptions.
The frame shows wear, including cracks, losses to the ornaments, flakes to the gilt, and re-gilted areas.
