Le Petit Parisien. Paris: October 14, 1906. No. 923. 8pp, 12 x 17 in.
A French publication featuring a powerful, front page illustration of the Atlanta Race Riots, entitled "Massacre de Negres dans les Rues D'Atlanta."
The race riots in 1906 Atlanta ensued following a string of supposed attacks made by black men towards white women, but strained economic tensions due to a rapid increase of population in the city especially in the black population, increased job competition between white and black workers, and an emergence of black elites in the city contributed to the rioting as well. The riots lasted two days and resulted in the death of twelve individuals--ten black men and two white persons, one of whom suffered from a heart attack when a mob came close to her home. The riots had long-reaching, negative effects on the city's economy afterwards.
