A note from a 2004 appraisal from Sotheby's indicates that: "A letter from Henry F. Marsh, from the Adirondack Museum, July 28, 1970 records the painting as #568, The Cocker's Head with Woodcock...presented to Dr. Thurston." However, the owners did not retain the documentation pertaining to the aforementioned information.
