Doyle, Arthur Conan (1859-1930). Prolific British writer best known for the creation of the iconic Detective Sherlock Holmes. ALS, "A Conan Doyle," 1p, 4.5 x 7 in., Undershaw, Hindhead, n.d. Addressed to Sir Francis Eden Lacey.
In 1897 Doyle moved to his estate named Undershaw, located in the village of Hindhead near the town of Haslemere, with the hope that the fresh air in the Surrey Hills would be beneficial to his wife Louise who had tuberculosis. He moved from Undershaw in 1907 after Louise's death and his second marriage to Jean Leckie. Presumably the letter dates from within this ten-year period on account of the stationery used as well as the fact that it was during this decade that Doyle was most actively pursuing his passion for cricket. Between 1899 and 1907 Doyle played 10 first-class matches for the Marylebone Cricket Club while also competing with an amateur cricket club, known as the Allahakbarries, which was founded by J.M. Barrie. Other prominent team members included H.G. Wells, A.A. Milne, and Rudyard Kipling.
In this letter to Sir Francis Eden Lacey, a first-class cricket player with the Marylebone Cricket Club and the first man to be knighted for services to a sport, Doyle remarks that "I must beat up some of our Scotch members. Stevens, Johnson, & others. Selkirk considers itself the centre of Scotch cricket."
