Ross, Sir John. APPENDIX TO THE NARRATIVE OF A SECOND VOYAGE IN SEARCH OF A NORTH-WEST PASSAGE, AND OF A RESIDENCE IN THE ARCTIC REGIONS DURING THE YEARS 1829, 1830, 1831, 1832, 1833. iNCLUDING THE REPORTS OF COMMANDER, NOW CAPTAIN, JAMES CLARK ROSS, R.N., F.R.S., F.L.S., ETC. AND THE DISCOVERY OF THE NORTHERN MAGNETIC POLE. London: A.W. Webster, 156, Regent Street, 1835. First Edition. 11 1/2 by 9 1/4 inches in the original patterned cloth with gilt printing to the spine. Complete with 20 inserted plates, 10 of which are delicately and beautifully hand-colored. Sir John Ross (1777 - 1856) had joined the Royal Navy as a first class volunteer at the age of 9. This second Arctic expedition was financed by the gin distiller, Sir Felix Booth, after the Royal Navy had refused support. The Appendix volume is much less common than the Narrative and appears to have been printed in a smaller number. ARCTIC BIBLIOGRAPHY 14866.
In the original blue-green patterned cloth binding; professionally rebacked retaining the original end pages and with the majority of the original gilt title backstrip laid-down. The wonderful inserted plates are fresh and clean and in Very Good condition.Condition
