Albumen stereoview by E &. H.T. Anthony from the "California Views" series, titled on the printed label on verso, "No. 53 - Montgomery Street, San Francisco."
The building featured in the stereoview is the studio of noted California photographer Robert H. Vance, with "Vance's Premium Daguerreian Gallery" painted boldly between the second and third floor windows. Vance is often referred to as the "Brady of the West" for the superior quality of his photographs and for being the leading documentarian of the California Gold Rush as Brady was to the Civil War. Note the large glass skylight on the roof of Vance's building.
