American, 1850s. An oil on canvas housed in an oak frame with beaded and gilded border, depicting a woman with a child holding a riding crop. A label identifies the sitters as "Taddy" Alden's father and grandmother. The sitters, purportedly, would be descendants of John Alden, a well-known Pilgrim who traveled to America on the Mayflower in 1620 and settled at Plymouth Colony. Unsigned; 41.25 x 33.25 in. (sight).
Wax relined. Wax relined. The current relining appears stable and relatively recent. The stretchers look newer. There is some in-painting located on the forehead of the woman, the hair of the boy, in the background next to the boy's face, and a significant amount towards the bottom (surrounding the boy's hand and riding crop. Some old craquelure, stabilized through the relining process, is visible, especially in the lower right corner.
