- Lot Description
The Massachusetts Centinel. Boston, MA: Benjamin Russell, April 11, 1789. Vol. XI, No. 8. 4pp. Approximately 9.5 x 15 in.
Featuring the news that George Washington was unanimously elected as the United States' first President and that John Adams was selected as the country's first Vice President. Also featuring on its masthead an engraving of Liberty as designed by Paul Revere.
The first presidential election commenced from December 15, 1788, through January 10, 1789, during which time the presidential electors were chosen in each state. On February 4, 1789, the Electoral College convened with ten of the thirteen states casting their votes for the presidency. Two months later on April 6, Congress counted and certified the electoral vote from the government's headquarters in New York City. Published five days later, this newspaper details the results of the historic election: "State of the votes for President and Vice-President of the United States, opened and counted April 6, 1789./ His Excellency George Washington, Esq. UNANIMOUS in all the States."
Then follows a list detailing electoral votes cast by state and in whose name each of those votes was cast, with the paper declaring that "By these returns it authentically appears that His Excellency JOHN ADAMS, had 34 votes - the Hon. John Jay 9 - the Hon. R. H. Harrison, 6 - the Hon. J. Rutledge, 6 - His Excellency John Hancock, 4 - His Excellency George Clinton, 3 - His Excellency Samuel Huntington, 2 - John Milton, Esq. 2 - James Armstrong, Esq. 1 - Hon. Benjamin Lincoln, 1 - Edward Telfair, Esq. 1./ So that Mr. Adams having the highest number next to the President, is chosen Vice-President."
Washington was inaugurated on April 30, 1789, in New York City. Significantly, Washington remains the only President to have been elected unanimously by the Electoral College.
Condition
Minor tears and losses along vertical fold, however, paper remains intact. Small portion of front page upper right corner appears to have been cut though no text is affected on either side. Faint dampstaining on top portion of paper not affecting text.
One round soup spoon bent.
