Glacial Kame Culture / Late Archaic Period, 4000-1500 B.C.
Putnam County Ohio
4-7/8 inches
A fine example crafted from polished, green banded slate. This piece exhibits sharp angularity in form, especially at the junction of the head and neck, and the neck and base. The vertical tail further accentuates the form.
This is another of the five, well-documented birdstones in the Sorgenfrei collection. The Bertha Hoffman farm in Putnam County, Ohio was the place of discovery sometime prior to 1927 and originally collected by Harry B. Mapel, the pioneer Northwest Ohio birdstone collector.
It should be noted that most of Mapel's birdstones went to another local northwest Ohio collector named Gilbert Walls. Gilbert Walls, a generation younger than Mapel, lived in Gomer, Ohio, a short distance from Mapel’s home. Around 1980, the Walls/Mapel birdstones were dispersed.
