Putnam County, Ohio
5-1/8 inches
Made from dark green, banded slate; with a concentric circle eye that terminates near the top of the head on the right side.
This is one of the five birdstones in the Sorgenfrei collection that was originally collected by the pioneer birdstone collector, Harry B. Mapel of Columbus Grove, Ohio. By 1914, Mapel had 16 birdstones pictured in The Archaeological Bulletin. The Sorgenfrei label on the bottom indicates this birdstone was found in 1927, but it is clearly illustrated in the 1914 publication on page 2. It was found near the Ottawa and Blanchard Rivers near Kalida, Ohio.
