Thayer, William M. MARVELS OF THE NEW WEST: A VIVID PORTRAYAL OF THE STUPENDOUS MARVELS IN THE VAST WONDERLAND WEST OF THE MISSOURI RIVER. Norwich, Ct.: Henry Bill Publishing Co., 1888. 9 3/4 by 6 3/4 inches in gilt pictorial green cloth with beveled edges. From the library of Eugene Field and signed by him. Also signed on the front endpages by Buffalo Bill Cody and by Frederic Remington with a small sketch of a horse. In a custom green cloth slipcase.
AUCTIONEER'S NOTE: It was pointed out to us that the Remington signature matches the forgeries done by Eugene Field II and Harry Dayton Sickles. The younger Field discovered after his father's death that the association with his father increased the value of the books. When his father's library ran out, he and Sickles began "acquiring" more books for his father's "library." It is thought that Field did most of the "acquiring" and Sickles did most of the forging. The bucking bronco is a classic Field/Sickles forgery. Eugene Field's signature with the place and date (the year of the elder Field's death) is also a classic Field forgery. While the Cody signature appears to be genuine - it doesn't show the pencil tracing and hesitation that some of Field's Cody signatures apparently do, it must still be called into question because of its presence with the other two signatures.
Professionally rebacked retaining the original backstrip; inner hinges reinforced; otherwise Very Good condition with strong autographs and association interest.
