Elisha Kent Kane (1820-1857) was a naval medical officer. He was appointed senior medical officer on the Grinnell Arctic Expedition (1850-1851), sent to locate the men of Sir John Franklin's expedition. They discovered Franklin's first winter camp, but not what happened to the men. Kane then organized a second expedition in 1853. His ship, the Advance, became icebound. They were still able to accomplish a large amount of meteorological, geographic, and other scientific research. Over two winters, the men began to fall ill from scurvy and general hardship. In May 1855 they abandoned the ship and made a nearly 3-month journey overland to Greenland where they were found by a relief expedition. They returned to New York in October 1855.
Kane went to England to personally report his findings to Lady Franklin, as he had promised, then sailed to Cuba on the advice of his doctor to attempt to recover his health. Too late, he died in Havana in Feb. 1857. His body was shipped to New Orleans, then transported by funeral train to Philadelphia. Reportedly, this was the longest funeral train of the century, other than Abraham Lincoln's.
