- Lot Description
Edwards, Bryan. THE HISTORY, CIVIL AND COMMERCIAL, OF THE BRITISH COLONIES IN THE WEST INDIES. Philadelphia: J. Humphreys, 1805-06. 4th Edition; 1st American Edition. 4 Volumes, Text, 8 1/2 by 5 1/4 inches; plus Atlas volume, 11 1/4 by 9 1/4 inches, complete with 12 maps. Ex-Library, bound in contemporary full calf with leather labels to the spine. The Atlas volume with a modern leather rebacking retaining the early board covers. Rosenbach stated, "The atlas, published in 1806, is seldom found with the work." It contains a total of 12 copper plate engraved maps - 3 are folding. The largest of these is the initial map of the entire West Indies. The other two folding maps are of Jamaica; and St. Domingo.
The text volumes show considerable binding wear and the contents are toned and with intermittent foxing, heavy at times. There are paper library number labels to the spines of the text volumes as well as two mid-19th century printed library labels to the pastedowns. The atlas volume has a modern leather spine and is complete and the maps, though foxed, are not marked and are in Good condition. The atlas volume has only one earlier public library label to the pastedown, ca. 1850.Condition
