THE AMERICAN SHOOTER'S MANUAL, COMPRISING, SUCH PLAIN AND SIMPLE RULES, AS ARE NECESSARY TO INTRODUCE THE INEXPERIENCED INTO A FULL KNOWLEDGE OF ALL THAT RELATES TO THE DOG, AND THE CORRECT USE OF THE GUN; ALSO A DESCRIPTION OF THE GAME IN THIS COUNTRY. Philadelphia: Carey & Hart, (1827). First Edition, 2nd Issue (with "ribbon" spelled correctly on page 235). 7 1/8 by 4 1/2 inches in a modern fine binding of textured brown cloth with 1/4 leather spine, gilt titling, five raised bands. Complete in 249 pages plus "form of a sportsman's journal" chart, page of errata, 4 pages of ads for guns, boots, fishing gear. The 3 inserted wood engraved plates are credited to "Kearny." An attractive example of an important American sporting book. Howes K108 ("First American sporting book); Streeter Sale 4084; Phillips, Sporting Books 21. Includes much information on guns, hunting dogs and their training and care, game birds, etc.
Front blank page bears early owner's name in ink, "W.H. Mills Syracuse N.Y.," and just below that in smaller script, "Boston Mass. Mar 22 1873." The following leaf (1/2 title) bears the handwritten early owner's name, "Edw B. Phillips 1843," but has a later ink line through it. "W.H. Mills, Syracuse," is also handwritten in ink at the upper corner of the title page. The text shows modest toning and occasional light foxing but is generally clean and fresh. Fine binding is in lovely condition.Condition
