Macomb, John N. and Newberry, John S. REPORT OF THE EXPLORING EXPEDITION FROM SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO, TO THE JUNCTION OF THE GRAND AND GREEN RIVERS OF THE GREAT COLORADO OF THE WEST, IN 1859. Washington: G.P.O., 1876. First Edition. 12 by 9 1/2 inches in original brown cloth with gilt titling to the spine. vii,[1],152pp. plus twenty-two plates (eleven in color), eight leaves of plate explanations, and large folding map. The very striking color plates were printed by Sinclair and Son, of Philadelphia. This famous expedition took place in 1859 but the full report was not printed until 1876. The large map (34 by 28 1/2 inches) is titled: "Map of Explorations and Surveys in New Mexico and Utah made under the direction of the Secretary of War by Capt. J.N. Macomb topl. engrs. assisted by C.H. Dimmock." Wheat described it as "one of the most beautiful maps ever produced by the Army."
Rebacked retaining most of the original backstrip; blind embossed stamp of the "Overland Publishing Co." to the title page; small printed private collector's label to the front free endpage -- no other library marks. Pencilled notes and markings in the margins. All plates clean and unmarked. The large and dramatic map by Baron Von Egloffstein has been professionally restored and rebacked with Japanese tissue. It retains strong vertical creases and shows modest toning but is otherwise bright and unmarked.Condition
