OFFICIAL LETTERS TO THE HONORABLE AMERICAN CONGRESS, WRITTEN, DURING THE WAR BETWEEN THE UNITED COLONIES AND GREAT BRITAIN, BY HIS EXCELLENCY GEORGE WASHINGTON, COMMANDER IN CHIEF OF THE CONTINENTAL FORCES; NOW PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. COPIED, BY SPECIAL PERMISSION FROM THE ORIGINAL PAPERS PRESERVED IN THE OFFICE OF THE SECRETARY OF STATE, PHILADELPHIA. New York: Printed and Sold by Samuel Campbell, 1796. 2 Volumes, 7 1/2 by 4 3/4 inches in a modern full leather fine binding with gilt tooling and ruling and gilt printed red leather labels and decorations to the spines, 5 raised bands. HOWES W142. 296, 311 pp. 2nd Edition, the first having been published in Boston in 1795. The letters cover the period from 24 June 1775 through 31 December 1778.

With an interesting Series of his Letters, particularly to the British Admirals, Arbuthnot and Digby, to Gen. Sire Henry Clinton, Lord Cornwallis, Sir Guy Carleton, Marquis de la Fayette, &c &c. none of which have been printed in the two volumes published a few months ago. New York. G. Robinson, corner of William and John Streets and J. Bull, No. 115 Cherry Street, and sold by James Rivington, no 156 Pearl Street, 1796. 7 1/2 by 4 7/8 inches in a matching modern full leather fine binding. 303 pp. HOWES W133: "The first seven letters are Tory forgeries previously printed as Letters from General Washington to several of his friends." Lacks the portrait frontis and the printed leaf following the title page with Washington's statement regarding the forgeries; but with the blank leaf following xiv.
Volume I of "Letters" has a closed tear in the margin of page 8 (no text loss); 3 inch margin tear at leaf 55/56 which minimally touches upon a couple of single letters of the text; pages 275-278 are high quality facsimiles. Volume II of "Letters" is complete and has no defects. The volume of "Epistles" is complete and has no defects. The 2 volumes of "Letters" show consistent toning but are otherwise clean and unmarked. The "Epistles" text is clean and quite fresh. In all a very attractive 3 Volume Group of a fairly scarce Washington publication in a very attractive professional fine binding.Condition
