HANDWRITTEN 137 PAGE DIARY/JOURNAL OF EDWARD BATES (4/23/1842 - 5/13/1860) DESCRIBING HIS FIRST YEAR AT KENYON - TRAGICALLY DIED OF A FEVER IN MAY, 1860.
Edward Bates was the son of Judge James Lawrence Bates, a Franklin County (Columbus) common pleas judge, city solicitor, member of the Columbus Board of Education and director of the State Penitentiary. Edward's mother was Maria, the eldest daughter of Alfred Kelley ("Father of the Ohio Canals"). Edward's siblings included Mary, Lucy, Alfred, and Fanny. His oldest sister, Julia, died as an infant. The family home was at 306 E. Broad St. in Columbus; the Alfred Kelley homestead was at 300 E. Broad St. This consistent, nearly daily, journal was carefully written in pen and ink during Edward's first four and a half months of life at Kenyon. Laid in are 4 letters to his parents during that time which his sister placed inside the diary. He died of "infections" the following May in Gambier. Edward started at Kenyon on September 7, 1859: "This morning I started for Kenyon College with all the necessaries and even the luxuries that a fond mother and a thoughtful father could think of and provide. My father concluded to accompany me and see me fairly settled. We left the Columbus depot at 12:55 P.M. and after a sorrowful ride of a few miles, we saw the buildings of Newark stretched out before us. Here we took another direction and before four found ourselves in Mt. Vernon, but six miles from those halls of learning where I shall spend so many weary & long hours, which I hope may prove profitable ones." His roommate was Edward Stanton, son of President Lincoln's Secretary of War, and some of his classmates described in detail include: Sam Clarke (Louisiana); Jim Kilbourne (Worthington); Charley King (Lancaster); Postlewaite (Kentucky); Thompson (Oswego, N.Y.); Gilbert (Portsmouth); "The Indian," Oronhyatekha (son of a chief); and Allen D'Orville. Edward's days included three sets of daily prayers and lessons from Professors Trimble, Lang, Blake and Wharton. He was an excellent student and received very high marks in his first term. His diary describes his membership in Nu Pi Kappa; his friends and classes; spiritual life and thoughts; meals (including lots of oysters!); and entertainment - walks, snowball fights, and pranks. In 1953 a historical marker was placed at Kenyon in Edward's honor by Fanny Platt Bates Little.
