Biart, Lucien. The Aztecs. Their History, Manners, and Customs. From the French. Authorized Translation by J.L. Garner. Chicago: A.C. McClurg and Company, 1887. 8vo, 3/4 morocco over marbled paper, matching endpapers, gilt outlining and spine lettering, four raised bands, top edge gilt, 343pp.
Lucien Bart (1828-1897) was born at Versailles (France). At the age of 18, he went to Mexico to collect specimens (especially insects and birds) for the Natural History Museum in Paris. He became a member of several scientific associations in both Europe and Mexico, and Emperor Maximillan honored him as a member of the Order of Our Lady of Guadalupe. When the regime was overthrown in 1867, he returned to France, his property in Mexico confiscated. He made many observations of native customs which were published in several periodicals as well as this compilation.
