All 8vo in green cloth with gilt spine lettering. Early ones have printed endpapers, but that paper is very brittle. Many of the free endpages have cracked at the hinge.
Beginning with Vol. 10, both spines and title pages specify Stallions: vol. 10 - Stallions 13887 - 16381, [1892]; vol. 11 - Stallions 16382 - 19801 [1892]; vol. 12 - stallions 19802 - 23499 [1893]; vol. 13 - stallions 23500 - 26899 [1895]; vol. 14 stallions 26900 - 30399 [1898]; vol. 15 - stallions 30400 - 34799 [1901]; vol. 16 - stallions 34800 - 39299 [1904]; vol. 17 - stallions 39300 - 44999 [1907]; vol. 18 - stallions 45000 - 49999 [1909].
Volumes 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 14 have "J.C. Beecher, Buffalo NY" on the title page, vols. 3, 5 and 6 have presentation inscriptions from John Wallace to James C. Beecher on free endpage. It is unclear what the relationship of this Beecher is to the famous family (if any). One of Harriet Beecher Stowe's brothers was James Chaplin, but his signature is nothing like this "J.C.'s" signature. James died in 1886, and some of these are dated 1885, 1886, 1887, 1898 - the latter two clearly an impossibility. There is also no indication that Harriet's brother had any affiliation with horse breeding or racing, etc. He was a Congregational minister, like others in his family. But there were many Beechers in upstate New York. Lyman Beecher had 14 children by three wives, so this "J.C." could be a son of one of the boys.
John Hankins Wallace was born in Pennsylvania in 1822. He moved to Iowa as a young man to become secretary of state fairs. He published Wallace's American Stud Book in 1867 and the Trotting Register in 1871. In 1875 he moved to New York to work on Wallace's Monthly and Wallace's Year Book. He gave up the Trotting Register after a dispute over the pedigree of the mare Sunol in 1891. (From Note 12 to Chapter 1, Cassiday, Rebecca. The publication history reflects these. 1891 (vol. 9) would be his last, with the Register taken over by the American Trotting Register Association. The first volumes would be published by Hurd and Houghton, then Wallace's Monthly, followed by Wallace Trotting Register Co. before he gave up the series. The Index was then published in 1892 in Wallace's adopted state of Iowa.
