A MEMOIR AND FAMILY HISTORY, 1850 - 1884, BY MARIA KELLEY BATES, OF COLUMBUS - THE OLDEST DAUGHTER OF ALFRED KELLEY AND WIFE OF JUDGE JAMES LAWRENCE BATES - 5 VOLUMES PLUS EPHEMERA - OVER 500 PAGES IN ALL - A DETAILED AND MOVING HISTORY OF A PROMINENT NINETEENTH CENTURY OHIO FAMILY.
The 4 bound volumes are 8 1/2 by 11 inches in maroon textured cloth with gilt titling to the spines, including "M.K.B." The fifth volume is unbound. The journal was written between 1850 - 1884 and transcribed, typed, and reproduced "mimeograph-style," and bound, it would appear, in the 1940's or 1950's? The Bates and Kelley families were very important figures in the growth and development of Columbus in the 19th Century. This memoir includes dated entries through a 34 year period noting celebrations of births, holidays, new homes, historic events. Maria Kelley Bates was a woman of strong religious beliefs which she turned to in difficult times, including the death of her oldest son, Edward, toward the end of his first year of study at Kenyon College in 1860. (See Edward's manuscript journal in this catalogue, Lot 205.)
Much of the memoir/history is set on the Bates estate at 306 E. Broad Street and at the Kelley estate at 300 E. Broad Street. Many of the entries are reflective of the current events and politics of the day, including references to President Lincoln and his assassination; President Johnson and also Ohio politics. Maria Bates' husband James was a judge and very involved in Ohio and Columbus Republican politics. Included are the births of Maria's and Jame's six children, Julia, Edward, Mary, Lucy, Alfred, and Fanny - and the deaths of Julia and Edward. Maria describes raising her children and their growth and development including the planning of their education based on their strengths and needs, and the role of tutoring and formal education. She details her husband's career as a judge, city solicitor, member of the board of education, and director of the Ohio Penitentiary. There are descriptions of family illnesses including scarlet fever, diptheria, cholera and infections. She describes numerous trips to visit family and and friends - mainly throughout the northeast. There are vivid pictures of traditions in gift giving, New Year's Day visitations and calling cards, home decorating and wood working, etc. Loose ephemera laid into the volumes includes new clippings, pictures, correspondence, and even Fanny's letter to Santa Claus -- and Santa's response!
