- Lot Description
Emory, W(illiam) H(emsley). NOTES OF A MILITARY RECONNOISSANCE, FROM FORT LEAVENWORTH, IN MISSOURI, TO SAN DIEGO, IN CALIFORNIA, INCLUDING PARTS OF THE ARKANSAS, DEL NORTE, AND THE GILA RIVERS. Washington: Wendell and Van Benthuysen, 1848. First Edition of the Senate issue of this famous report. 9 by 5 1/4 in contemporary (original) brown cloth binding with printed paper label to the spine. Complete in 416 pages with 40 engraved lithograph plates (Weber & Co., Baltimore) and 3 full page lithograph maps/plans. The large folding map, " "Military Reconnaissance of the Arkansas Rio Del Norte River..." is not present ("not in all copies -" Howes); although there is present the 20 by 20 1/2 inch, "Map of the Territory of New Mexico, Made by Order of Brig. Gen. S.W. Kearny...." by Abert and Peck. This copy bears the ink handwritten inscription on the blank page preceding the title page: "Hon. Stephen A Douglas To O. Phelps Jr. Washington, D.C. February 2, 1849;" and the ink signature, "Oliver Phelps, Jr." on the upper right corner of the title page. The presentation inscription does NOT appear to be in Douglas's hand.
The binding is solid and firm; there is chipping to the printed paper spine label, with the loss of the letter "C" in "California." The contents, including all the plates/maps, are quite clean and fresh with only very minimal occasional foxing. The 20 by 20 1/2 inch "Map of the Territory of New Mexico," has been professionally repaired with tissue backing -- including one 6 inch (now) closed tear in the upper left quadrant and several tissue repairs to the edges, etc. It was originally folded, now lies flat and it is clean and "shows" well.Condition
