Washington: Wendell and Van Benthuysen, 1848. First Edition of the Senate issue of this famous report. 9 by 5 1/4 in contemporary (original) brown cloth binding with printed paper label to the spine. Complete in 416 pages with 40 engraved lithograph plates (Weber & Co., Baltimore) and 3 full page lithograph maps/plans. The large folding map, " "Military Reconnaissance of the Arkansas Rio Del Norte River..." is not present ("not in all copies -" Howes); although there is present the 20 by 20 1/2 inch, "Map of the Territory of New Mexico, Made by Order of Brig. Gen. S.W. Kearny...." by Abert and Peck. This copy bears the ink handwritten inscription on the blank page preceding the title page: "Hon. Stephen A Douglas To O. Phelps Jr. Washington, D.C. February 2, 1849;" and the ink signature, "Oliver Phelps, Jr." on the upper right corner of the title page. The presentation inscription does NOT appear to be in Douglas's hand.
