Wilkes, Charles (U.S.N.). ATLAS. NARRATIVE OF THE UNITED STATES EXPLORING EXPEDITION. DURING THE YEARS 1838, 1839, 1840, 1841, 1842. (Atlas volume only). Philadelphia: Lea & Blanchard, 1845. 11 by 7 1/2 inches; professionally rebacked with corners restored, retaining both the original blind stamped and gilt printed and pictorial covers and the original gilt printed backstrip. Complete with 5 large folding engraved maps printed by Sherman & Smith (N.Y.) on "bank-note" paper. Maps include: Track Map showing the routes taken by the expedition, and one map each of the Antarctic continent, the "Feejee" Islands, the Oregon Territory, and the "southeast portion of Hawaii." With mid-19th Century partially printed library bookplate to the front pastedown - but no other library indicators inside or out. The rebacking and repair to the corners extremely well done; gilt printing to the upper cover, gilt pictorial decoration to lower cover, and gilt titling to spine all still fresh and bright. Maps show uniform toning/darkening but are otherwise in Very Good condition. The initial "track map" has had some neat professional restoration to the bottom margin and at the folds. A complete and fairly fresh example of a very famous atlas.Condition
