Hooper, C.L. REPORT OF THE CRUISE OF THE U.S. REVENUE STEAMER THOMAS CORWIN, IN THE ARCTIC OCEAN, 1881. Washington: Government Printing Office (48th Congress, 1st Session, Senate Ex. Doc. No. 204), 1884. First Edition. 11 3/4 by 9 inches in the original blue pebbled cloth with blind ruling and gilt titling to the upper cover. Complete in 147 pp., frontispiece plus 14 additional leaves of tissue guarded plates; text illustrations.
The United States Revenue Marine service ws the precursor to the modern day U.S. Coast Guard. Hooper's summary report documents an important scientific expedition to the Arctic Ocean which included such natables as the naturlists John Muir and Edward William Nelson. The expedition sailed from San Francisco and traveled along the shore of Alaska, with stops on islands in the Aleutians and Kotzebue Sound, and with landings on Herald and Wrangel Islands in the Chukchi Sea. At the rear of the text is a report by John Muir, "On the Glaciation of the Arctic and Subarctic Regions visited by the United States Steamer Corwin in the year 1881."

Healy, Capt. M.A. REPORT OF THE CRUISE OF THE REVENUE MARINE STEAMER CORWIN IN THE ARCTIC OCEAN IN THE YEAR 1885. Washington: G.P.O., 1887. First Edition. 11 3/4 by 9 inches in the original brown pebbled cloth with blind ruling and gilt titling to the upper cover. 102 pp.; illustrated with plates and two large folding maps: one showing the Koowak River and the other a map of the Noatak River. There are four chromolithographic plates (one bird, one plant, two fish), and thirty-eight black and white plates, many of an anthropological and ethnographic nature. Healy (1839-1904) patrolled the 20,000 miles of Alaskan coastline for more than 20 years, earning great respect from the natives and seafarers alike. Includes shorter accounts by expedition members who were sent to complete the survey of the Koowak River (J.C. Cantrell) and explore the Noatak River (S.B. McLenegan).
