.68 caliber, 9" round barrel, no S/N. Bright finish, brass furniture, wood stock. Flat flintlock with fenced, faceted, integral bridled iron pan and flat reinforced cock. Lock marked Mre de / Liberville . Prior to 1793 "Liberville" was the "Charleville" arsenal, placing production of the lock no earlier than 1794/94. Barrel tang marked Mle 1763 . French proofs on barrel, brass triggerguard and side plate marked L2 . Brass butt cap, flat copper nose band, brass entry pipe, iron thimble, horn tipped wood ramrod. Stock with rudimentary carved moldings around lock and incised lines around lock, counterpane and along forend. An interesting assembled pistol using most French parts, crudely restocked long ago. The carved moldings show both English influence and that of the officer's version of the M1763 pistol. The standard French M1763 was iron mounted and only the M1775 Navy variant was brass mounted, but it was also marked Mle1775 on the tang. This pistol was assembled using Mle1763 barrel and lock with Mle1775 mounts, with the exception of the nose cap which was dispensed with and the stock was reinforced with the copper piece, again showing English influence. An interesting pistol from the Federal Period that was restocked to keep it in service.
