- Lot Description
American, 1803. Pen and ink on paper, housed in a giltwood frame. Depiction of a flower-filled urn with birds, dated June 1803, accompanying a poem reading The Rose / How fair is the rose! What a beautiful flower! / In summer so fragrant and gay! / But the leaves are beginning to fade in an hour, / And they wither and die in a day. / Yet the rose has one powerful virtue to boast, / Above all the flowers of the field: / When its leaves are all dead, and fine colours lost / Still how sweet a perfume will it yield! / Thomas Perkins; 20 x 13 in. (sight).
The text is a verse taken from a hymn by Isaac Watts (English, 1674-1748), a well-known minister and writer of hymns. This, and other verses by Watts, regularly appear on American samplers and presentation drawings of the late 18th and 19th century.
