Albumen photograph showing U.S. Grant's funeral procession in New York City, 10.5 x 13 in., matted and framed, 16.25 x 19.25 in.
Grant's funeral procession made its way through New York City on August 8, 1885, and crowds packed together to witness this historic occasion. The famed Civil War general and president was accompanied by a column of mourners that stretched seven miles long. The route of the procession through New York was made to extend as far as possible, and many of the buildings along the route were draped in black to honor Grant. Note the American flag flying at half-staff above the building near the center of the photograph.
