Double-man Teapot
porcelain with stoneware base
artist signature on base of posterior
ca 1999
ht. with base 13, wd. 10, dp. 8.5 in.
This piece by Akio Takamori is among his strongest abstracted forms while still representing a recognizable object, the teapot. Made of porcelain, there exist very few (approximately five) variations of this work, all of which were sold through the Garth Clark Gallery in New York. Takamori's variations were from one figure to three, often reversing the position of the figures to enhance their powerful sexuality. Each variation of the "teapots" became unique and all were individually decorated in red glaze. Much larger than other "teapots" by Takamori, most of these works are now in museum collections and this is the first of this body of work to come to auction. Acquiring this piece is a rare opportunity to any collector of Takamori's work.
