Although the surrender of the Confederacy was days away and slavery was coming to an end, Lincoln's address was not a victory speech for the North. Instead, the President spoke of sadness, reminding the country of the wrongs committed by those in the North and South and calling for unity and reconciliation. The speech ends with Lincoln's famous words, "...With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle for his widow and his orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations..." The inaugural address, which is the second shortest in American history, is inscribed, along with the Gettysburg address, in the Lincoln Memorial.
