Lot of 4 titles. Whitney, Henry C. Life On The Circuit With Lincoln . Boston: Estes & Lauriat, 1892. 8vo in maroon cloth with gilt front and spine, top edge gilt, printed endpapers, 45 full-page illustrations (photographic), 4 in-text photos, 20 facsimiles of documents (9 folding), facsimiles of 3 sketches, plus a few other in-text illustrations. (Howes C386; Monaghan #1112) Major Henry Clay Whitney served with Lincoln for a period on the Eighth Circuit Court (Illinois). He documents Lincoln's character and skills (politician, orator, military leader), and rise to the Presidency of the nation.
Lamon, Ward Hill. The Life of Abraham Lincoln; From His Birth to His Inauguration as President . Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1872. 8vo, oxblood cloth with gilt front and spine, 15 illustrated plates plus 3-page facsimile of Lincoln's account of his family, 547pp. (Howes L46; Monaghan #926)
Starr, John W. Lincoln And The Railroads. New York: Dodd Mead, 1927. 8vo, red cloth with gilt front and spine, 30 illustrations (including 3 multi-age facsimiles of legal documents drafted by Lincoln), 325pp. Limitation page states: " Of the Limited Edition 287 copies have been printed, of which this is #135 ;" signed by the author. In a number of ways Lincoln was associated with railroads. He grew up in the days before they crisscrossed nation, and initially opposed the railroads indiscriminately clearing the land for right-of-ways. He then seems to have "come around," and in his legal practice defended them - sometimes. In Hurd v. Rock Island Bridge Co., he argued for the right of land routes to bridge waterways, important for roads and railroads versus riverboat traffic. He signed the Pacific Railroad Act of 1862, which provided for construction of railroads from the Missouri River to the Pacific - the Transcontinental Railroad. Initially he saw it as a war measure so that the West coast could be reached more efficiently. His journey both to Washington and his final journey to Springfield were both by rail. (Monaghan #2973)
Thomas, Benjamin P. Abraham Lincoln: A Biography. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1952. 8vo, red over black cloth, gilt spine, top edge gilt, 548pp, xii (index). Limitation page states: " Of the First Edition of Abraham Lincoln Five Hundred copies (of which four hundred and seventy-five are for sale) have been printed on all-rag paper with the Borzoi Watermark. Each copy is numbered and is signed by the author. This is number 312 ." Label on front pastedown " Governor Stratton " of Illinois. This has been described as one of the more readable (and accurate) single-volume biographies of our 16th President, both clear enough for a beginner but with enough material to keep an advanced scholar interested.Whitney: A tight, sound copy with spine faded but gold lettering is clear and legible. Leaves just barely starting to tone at edges. Lamon: Spine is faded with some hinge weakness and rubbed edges. Tight and sound and better than most copies in this scarce title. Starr: Pages partially uncut. Cracked at the front and rear inner hinge but a clean copy. Thomas: Excellent condition.Condition
