Lot of 16 albumen photographs, most on 11 x 14 in. mounts, taken by A. Zeno Shindler in Washington, DC, ca 1868-1869. Many of the photographs feature Otoe men, and it is known that an Otoe delegation signed an unratified treaty in the capital on Feb. 13, 1869, though the specific dates of their visit have never been established. Subjects include: Chief Medicine Horse, also known as Mysterious Horse (two poses); Chief Munch-a-hun-cha (Joe John); Chief Buffalo (two poses); Little Pipe (two poses); Chief Pipe Stem (two copies of the same pose, one a smaller 6 x 8.5 photograph); Ar-ka-kee-tah; Chief Buffalo, Medicine Horse, and Bam-na-ly together; Pi-sing or Ka-ke-gasha; and Black Elk, the Head Chief of the Otoes. Most of these photographs are described in Paula Richardson Fleming's Native American Photography at the Smithsonian: The Shindler Catalogue (Smithsonian Institution, 2003). Also included is an 11 x 14 in. mount with four 3.75 x 4.75 albumen prints of Pawnee men by William Henry Jackson, taken in his studio in Omaha ca late 1860s.
