Late Prehistoric Period, A.D. 1000-1540
length 4.375 in.
Heavily engraved, with triangles filled with cross-hatching which radiate out and down from the bowl. Hollowed eye cavities may have contained pearls or other contrasting stone; two conically drilled stem holes at the rear, one significantly larger than other.
Llewellyn Casterline of Belmont, New York was the first known collector of this pipe. Casterline began assembling his large collection in 1908 and amassed a very large collection of pipes and many other types of prehistoric and historic artifacts.
Two examples of this extremely rare pipe form are in the Sorgenfrei collection. Both are outstanding and beautiful sculptures. Only a very few of these animal effigy pipes that stand on all four "legs" are known. One of them was in the form of a fish in the old collection of Phil Kientz.
