Glacial Kame Culture / Late Archaic Period, 4000-1500 B.C.
Putnam County, Ohio
5.5 in.
Made from a dark slate; with oval-shaped, button pop-eyes; each eye having a distinct ridge on the underside. This ridge is a common trait found on birdstones with pop-eyes. The graceful fantail rises only slightly from the body.
This and other birdstones of the type typically have bridges that extend from the underside of the body at both the front and rear to facilitate the drilling of perforations. However, the rear perforation bridge was broken in prehistoric times, so a small repair hole was drilled from the bottom of the birdstone to exit on the top of the back.
The Sorgenfrei collection contains five birdstones from the Harry B. Mapel collection and this is one of the five.
