Middle Archaic Period, 8000-5000 B.C.
Richland County, Ohio
length 5.625 in.
The large knobbed crescent or knobbed lunate bannerstone, is one of the more highly developed of all bannerstone forms. The long, graceful, tapering wings or arms, that terminate with a knob, have always been a very desirable bannerstone form for collectors. Although they might not be considered rare, intact examples are and unbroken are very rare. The large size of these wonderful creations often did not survive the period in which they were made or the advent of modern farm implements. Often Knobbed Crescents were created to display a series of concentric circles in the center of the perforation barrel on at least one of the faces. This example would undoubtedly show this trait had an early collector chosen another location for his label.
