Accompanied by a radiocarbon dating analysis, provided by the University of Arizona AMS Laboratory, dated March 7, 2017. The report dates the club to ca 1666.
This club has descended through the family of Major William Bradford of Plymouth Colony. Major Bradford, a son of Governor William Bradford (1590-1657), followed his father’s footsteps, and became an instrumental leader of the Colony.
In 1662, Bradford aided in the capture of the Wampanoag Sachem (leader) Wamsutta, who was thought to be conspiring against the English. Wamsutta was arrested and mysteriously died three days later. His brother Metacomet, more popularly known as King Philip, took Wamsutta's position as Sachem. Tensions over land and trade grew, and in 1675, King Philip lead an attack on a group of colonists, killing all. Major Bradford was a major participant in the fight against King Philip. He commanded Plymouth’s militia and was in charge during the Narragansett Fort Fight or Great Swamp Massacre (December 1675).
A club attributed to Metacomet is held within the collections of the Western Reserve Historical Society (no. 43.3799)
